Vienna is known for its music and cafes. It is also a city with splendid architecture, thanks to Franz Josef's nearly non-stop improvement of the city's buildings. Vienna is also a city that is remarkably progressive in its support of avant-garde architecture. Vienna's art history museum is a world class institution. Mostly due to the interest of its nearly 600 years of uninterrupted Hapsburg rule in which time the rulers amassed art from all parts of Europe, the near East and Egypt.
